Calum Chambers is poised for medical assessment at Middlesbrough ahead of a season-long loan deal to the Riverside Stadium, Sky Sources understand.
The Arsenal defender left Southampton for the Emirates in a £16m deal in July 2014 and has featured 59 times for Arséne Wenger’s side. Chambers scored for Arsenal in their 4-3 opening Premier League defeat to Liverpool, but now a move to Boro is imminent.
The Gunners brought in Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia for £35m and, the Germany international is expected to be Laurent Koscielny’s regular centre-half partner – meaning Chambers will further fall down the pecking order.
Aitor Karanka-led Middlesbrough have performed well on their return to the English top flight, winning one and drawing two of their three games to date – including last weekend’s goalless draw against West Bromwich Albion. Chambers’ addition to the Boro squad would bolster their defence as they look to stake their claim as a top flight side.
The 21-year old Englishman could be in line to make a home debut against Crystal Palace on September 10, when the Premier League resumes after the international break. Should everything go right, Chambers will become Middlesbrough’s 10th summer signing of the summer.
