Last summer Arsenal fans were shocked at the end of the end of the transfer window, after Wenger didn’t sign any outfield player, bringing in only Peter Cech. So far Wenger has signed only Swiss International Granit Xhaka, while the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have been active during this transfer window.
Wenger needs to sign at least one defender before the start of next season, in other for Arsenal to build on last season’s performance that saw them finish the season runners-up to Champions Leicester City. Arsenal have been linked with two defenders lately 21-year old Juventus and Italian centre-back Daniele Rugani and 25-year old Roma and Greece international star Kostas Manolas.
Wenger who has already seen a 30 million euros bid turned down by Juventus for promising defender Rugani, is set to come back with an improved bid for the coveted defender. Juventus chiefs believe Rugani is the future of Juventus and Italian defence and very much keen to hold on to the defender.
While Roma’s centre back Kostas Manolas has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Serie A within 2 seasons in Italian top flight football.
With Italy’s impressive defensive record at the Euros, football fans were once again reminded how skilled Italians are in the art of stopping opponents from scoring goals. This quality is something lacking in the Arsenal defence and something Wenger would want to address with the signing of one of these defenders.
