It is no more news that Arsenal are still scouring Europe in a bid to bring in a top notch defender to plug the leaky hole in defence, following long-term injuries suffered by Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.
The Gunners have been linked with several names, including Fenerbahce’s Simon Kjaer, Bayer Leverkusen defender Omer Toprak, West Bromwich Albion’s Johnny Evans and Jose Fonte of Southampton. However, Valencia defence stalwart, Shkodran Mustafi is their prime target.
Meanwhile, negotiations between the Gunners and Valencia are at a deadlock, as both sides are remaining firm on their stance of the valuation of Mustafi. Arsenal are now looking elsewhere and it appears, they have their attentions on Kostas Manolas, too.
As per The Express, Arsenal scouts were present at the Champions League qualifier between Roma and Porto last night to see Manolas in action for the Serie A outfit.
Arsene Wenger has been keenly interested in the Greek international for a while now and with Arsenal suffering frustrations regarding signing a defender with the transfer window just a week away from closing, Manolas seems to be Wenger’s next option.
Manolas, 25, is a mainstay in the Roma team and the addition of the Greek international to the Gunners defence will give Wenger more brilliant options in that area.
