Arsenal are currently locked in talks with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen over a potential deal for Serge Gnabry, according to reports.
Gnabry, who shone brightly for Germany as they picked up bronze in the just-concluded Rio Olympics, has just one year left on his current contract at Arsenal. But neither the club nor the player are willing to open talks over extending the contract – Sky Sports understand – contrary to Arséne Wenger’s suggestion last week.
The Arsenal gaffer had claimed Gnabry would remain at the Emirates Stadium for the rest of the season and that his contract will be extended.
“I want to keep Serge Gnabry and extend his contract. I allowed him to go to the Olympics to help Germany. I think he’s here now for a long time”, Wenger said.
However, Gnabry is keen on a return to the Bundesliga – with Werder Bremen willing to take the former Stuttgart youngster on a permanent basis.
“In terms of outgoings, Serge Gnabry is subject of negotiations this morning between Werder Bremen and Arsenal”, Sky Sports’ Andy Burton said.
“He has one year left on his contract but it looks like he will be sold.
“I don’t think he has any intention of signing a new deal here and I don’t think Arsenal would give him one.”
