The Gunners’ 4-3 humiliation at the hands of Jurgen Klopp could have been worse, with the Anfield side easily penetrating Arsenal’s rearguard, as predicted.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is short of defenders and this has made his side’s defence look frail and that is going to remain so even for next weekend’s game against last season’s champions Leicester, unless the French tactician manages to bring in one or two centre halves – with Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi on the North Londoners’ radar.
Wenger has the same issue to deal with in attack, as striker Olivier Giroud does not have suitable competition or adequate replacement when he is not available for selection.
Meanwhile, Arsenal had an official present at the Portuguese Primera Liga game between Benfica and Tondela. Per Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, the Gunners had someone on the attendees’ list. However, the target is not known. At least, for now.
Arsenal were linked with Benfica’s Konstantinos Mitroglou earlier this year and the reports came as a shock for Arsenal fans. Mitroglou was labeled a flop during his time at Fulham, but he has been doing well for Benfica.
Apart from Mitroglou, Victor Lindelof, Benfica’s central defender is also a target for some European heavyweights, but he did not perform up to expectations in the game.
However, it is left to be seen which of the Benfica centre halves Arsenal are looking to sign.
