Arsenal have received a major setback as regards their number one defensive target Shkodran Mustafi, with the defender’s father stating that a number of top sides are interested in his son’s signature.
The Gunners are really short of options in their rearguard as they expect Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista to be out of action for a prolonged period of time. Laurent Koscielny is also unfit yet after representing France in the European Championships earlier in June.
A transfer was Mustafi has, however, been on the cards over the past weeks, with many believing the Valencia centre-back will complete the move next week. Meanwhile, negotiations were still a standstill as at yesterday as both clubs were unwilling to withdraw their compromise on the valuation of Mustafi. There are reports, today, that the former Everton defender will be in London for medicals on Monday after his club reached an agreement with Arsenal for a £25.9m transfer.
Mustafi’s father has now delivered what would have come as a severe blow to Arsenal faithful, after saying his son has a number of options.
“Very soon you will know about the future of Mustafi”, Kujtim Mustafi told Goal.
“Two or more clubs are in negotiations.”
Mustafi has been a pivota figure in the Germany national team and two years ago in Brazil, he won the FIFA World Cup with his nation. The 24-year old is also regarded as one of the best defenders in La Liga after his move from Sampdoria.
