Aside signing a striker this summer, Arsenal certainly could do with the signing of a centre back especially as reports claim Calum Chambers is leaving the club temporarily for a loan spell. But according to reports today, Arsenal are set to lose out on one of their main targets for the centre back position. According to Italian TV channel Sportitalia, London club Chelsea have offered £35million to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
Arsenal need to be more serious in the transfer market, as they were earlier linked to the player. But as it is now, Chelsea is the favourite to sign him. The Senegalese if signed would have boosted Arsenal’s poor defence.
Chelsea is in pole position to secure the services of the strong defender who is also a target for London rival Arsenal.
The 25-year-old is tempted to make a move to Stamford Bridge according to recent reports, as the Senegalese is a main summer target for incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte after he enjoyed an impressive campaign with Napoli last season.
It is understood that the Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis is determined to keep the player at the club.
“I have never quarreled with Koulibaly. He will remain with us for another three years,” he told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“If he wants to renew his contract with us to five years then we will meet but the deal must satisfy both parties, because these relationships are never one-sided.”
