North London side, Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Inter Milan’s hit man Mauro Icardi, as per the Daily Star.
The broadsheet claims Icardi’s agent is set to jet into England to begin negotiations with the Gunners over a possible Emirates move for his client. Boss Arsene Wenger is eager to bring in a quality striker who can help his side’s tilt for the Premier League title this term.
The Gunners were reportedly close to the signing of Leicester City’s striker Jamie Vardy prior to the Euro 2016, but the England international made a u-turn and penned a new deal with last season’s Premier League champions. With Gonzalo Higuain also opting to join Juventus after Arsenal’s interest, the Gunners are now keen to land Icardi.
Italian news outlet II Messagero [per The Star] claim Icardi’s agent and wife Wanda Nara will hold talks with Arsenal and if terms are not agreed, the Gunners’ London rivals Chelsea could chip in with a bid.
However, Icardi’s side Inter Milan are set to offer him a huge pay rise from his current £3.2m a year contract. The Nerazurris want to offer Icardi £5m-a-year to remain with them.
Icardi’s sharpness and anticipation will be a great boost for him, should he move to the English Premier League. Although it is true to some extent that the striker is not world class yet, however he will be a massive upgrade on the current crops of strikers Arsene Wenger possesses in his ranks.
Arsenal lost their first game of the new campaign 3-4 at home to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and the Gunners will be looking to bounce back when they visit last season’s Champions Leicester next weekend.
