Spanish source Don Balon are carrying a report that Arsenal can lure Barcelona centre-back Jeremy Mathieu to the Emirates for £10.4m [€12m].
Arsenal are linked with an array of quality defenders following the injuries suffered by Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista, as well as the unfit condition of Laurent Koscielny. The Gunners are rumoured to be in for Valencia defence stalwart Shkodran Mustafi and Fenerbahce’s Simon Kjaer in order to plug the leaky hole in defence, which was exposed by Liverpool on Sunday.
Mathieu’s versatility ensures the Frenchman can operate in any position in the rearguard and with Barcelona’s purchase of Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne this summer, Mathieu seems to have fallen down the pecking order in Luis Enrique’s side.
Arsene Wenger believes Mathieu’s vast experience can help his side all the way as they aim to mount a serious title tilt this season. With the Premier League possessing the best managers in football at the moment, the race for the title is likely to go down the wire!
The Gunners travel to Leicester next Saturday to battle The Foxes for all three points at the King Power Stadium – with both sides looking for their first win of the campaign.
