Arsenal’s need for defensive reinforcement was obvious during the weekend as the Gunners were beaten at home by Liverpool in their opening fixture in the English Premier League.
This has made Gunners boss Arsene Wenger start scouring Europe for quality defenders to bolster his ranks. Injuries to Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker plus the absence of Laurent Koscielny due to match fitness meant Rob Holding and Calum Chambers played centre halves for Arsenal. However, their inexperiences showed.
The Sun has now linked Arsenal with a move for Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu, who will also jump at the chance to leave the Nou Camp.
Wenger believes Mathieu will not be expensive and that the French defence stalwart will bring his vast experience to the Arsenal squad.
As per The Express, however, Liverpool are also attempting to lure Mathieu to Anfield this summer, with boss Jurgen Klopp keen to improve his options in defence.
Barcelona will be want to listen to negotiations for Mathieu, having signed young France international defender Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne. Mathieu joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2014 and has made over 70 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish giants.
