In the aftermath of their opening Premier League defeat at home to Liverpool at the weekend, Arsenal are looking to bring in one or two top notch defenders before the end of the transfer window.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for Valencia defence leader Shkodran Mustafi as well as French defender Jeremy Mathieu, who marshals the Barcelona defence.
Per The Daily Star, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Mathieu will not be expensive and Barcelona is likely to part ways with the centre half, as they have signed defenders Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne earlier in the summer.
Also, reports chipped in yesterday that the Gunners’ move for Valencia’s Mustafi has collapsed – although the reports seem to have simmered for now – but the North London side are still hopeful of completing the deal for the World Cup winning defender.
Mustafi’s contract at Valencia is set to expire in 2019 but a £30m offer could railroad the Spanish side into parting ways with their prized asset.
The 24-year old has had a taste of Premier League football as he has played for Everton in the past, hence Mustafi will certainly find it easy adapting to the style of football in the English top flight.
For Mathieu, however, it is left to be seen if Arsenal will still push on with the transfer as the defender sustained an injury during Barcelona’s first leg 2-0 defeat of Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday.
