Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has suggested that the Gunners should ask for Sergio Aguero in exchange if they let Alexis Sanchez join Manchester City.
There remains much uncertainty regarding Sanchez’s future at Arsenal, with the attacker having less than a year remaining on his current contract, while he has yet to commit to a new deal.
Merson believes that Arsenal should sanction the sale of Sanchez if the Chile international doesn’t want to stay but indicated that Arsene Wenger should look to get City striker Aguero as part of the deal.
Merson told goal: “I don’t think Arsenal can replace Sanchez, can they? He gets 30 of their goals, but you’ve got to move on.
“If someone doesn’t want to be at the club, Arsenal are a big club and you don’t want players who don’t want to be there. Arsenal are a big club, a very big club and you don’t want that.
“He’s a good player – if I were Arsenal I’d be ringing up Man City and saying ‘Give us Aguero and you can have Sanchez.’
“[If Alexis wants to go to Man City] then I’d say I want Aguero. He’s better than Sanchez.”
While Aguero is the more clinical player out of the pair, the evidence suggests that Sanchez is much better than the Argentine with regards to his link-up play, with the Arsenal player having provided more assists and created more chances per game in the Premier League last season.
Losing Sanchez, who was undoubtedly Arsenal’s best performer last season, would certainly be a significant setback for the club, but the arrival of Aguero would certainly soften the blow.
