One of the players keen watchers of the Italian Serie A will be keeping an eye on at the world cup starting in two days time is Sampdoria and Uruguay’s Lucas Torreira. The defensive midfielder is one of the highly rated Serie A players who will be playing at the world cup in Russia. I know someone who has a small bet on him via the NetBet Sport World Cup Betting app to be in the team of the tournament.
The player could however be on his way to Arsenal if reports in the Italian media and some sections of the English media are worth believing. The 22 year old highly rated midfielder was initially thought to be on his way to Napoli. The deal appeared to be straight forward until Arsenal’s interest was reported. It is now said the player’s wage demands has put Napoli off and the player himself appears to prefer a move to England with Arsenal the only English club said to be interested in his so far.
Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with the player but reports have it that it is only Arsenal that are ready to pay the €30 million Sampdoria are asking for. The player is said to have a €25 million release clause which must be paid in one go but Sampdoria would prefer €30 million payment spread over an undisclose number of years. This Arsenal and the Italian club are said to be working on with reports claiming both clubs are positive a deal can be reached.
And judging by reports claiming Arsenal have a little warchest for transfers this summer, a payment spread may actually work more for Arsenal than having to pay his release clause in one single payment.
Although the reports also claim Arsenal and the player are yet to agree on a wage demand but if it is true that Arsenal are in talks with Sampdoria, then they must be certain that they have a good chance of reaching an agreement with the player.
Where will he play if he signs?
I have seen much of the South American but those who watch the Serie A more than I do confirm he is a very good player and I go with the majority. Should he join Arsenal I will expect him to take Granit Xhaka’s spot in the team. The Switzerland international is no doubt a good player unfortunately he is not a defensive midfielder. He is to me a deep lying player maker and not a defensive midfielder. He could play alongside Torreira in the same team but I sincerely doubt Emery will be doing that.
