With the search for a striker taking forever, it appears Arsenal have moved temporarily to other targets of theirs. According to reports, Arsenal are on the verge of completing what would be their third major summer signing. This time it is a goalkeeper. Metro sources understand that young NEC Nijmegen of Netherland goalkeeper Guy Smith, 20, will arrive at London Colney today to undergo a medical ahead of a two weeks trial at the club.
This move is simply as a result of the fact that both David Ospina and Szczesny are set to depart the club this summer. Ospina has been linked with a move to Turkey and it is obvious he wants to leave Arsenal to seek regular first team chances while Poland international Szczesny is to remain at Roma on loan for another year.
And with only Darmian Martinez available as the back up to Petr Cech, it is quite understandable as to why Arsenal may be needing another goalkeeper. Guy Smith who played 11 times for NEC Nijmegen’s reserves last season keeping three clean sheets in the process is seen as the ideal signing to back as back up to either or both of Petr Cech and Martinez.
The 20-year-old goaltender will arrive on a free transfer having refused NEC Nijmegen’s offer of a new contract after running down his contract with the Dutch club.
