Arsenal seem to be making headway in the race to bring in a quality centre-back before the summer transfer window slams shut on August 31.
Arsene Wenger’s side are currently scouring Europe for a top notch defence marshal who can help spur the team to Premier League glory this term. Injuries to Per Mertesacker [five months] and Gabriel Paulista [four weeks] plus the unfit state of Laurent Koscielny forced Wenger to field a makeshift centre-back pairing of Rob Holding and Calum Chambers for their opening league defeat to Liverpool last weekend and, both the summer signing and the former Southampton man were ran ragged by the Reds’ attack. Liverpool defeated Arsenal 4-3 in the encounter.
Valencia defence stalwart Shkodran Mustafi has been the name linked with Arsenal for the past weeks, but talks between both clubs reportedly broke down as they haggled on a transfer fee for the defender.
Now, Gazzetta dello Sport’s journalist Emanuele Giulianelli has claimed the Gunners could reach an agreement for the transfer tomorrow and Mustafi will fly into London on Monday to complete a move to Arsenal.
“Arsenal: looks like Mustafi will be agreed tomorrow. Club were waiting to see if the injury will heal as expected. Looks to be €30m (£25.9m). Mustafi medicals with Arsenal expected to be on Monday”, Giulianelli [@EmaGiulianelli] tweeted.
However, it is left to be seen whether this news is true as the Italian journalist also reported of Arsenal’s deal for Karim Benzema last summer, but the Real Madrid striker refuted all claims and remained at the Santiago Bernabeu.
