Arsenal have sealed a deal with Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon regarding the transfer of Joel Campbell, O Jogo understand.
Campbell, 24, joined Arsenal in 2011 and was sent on loan to three different countries where he featured for Lorient, Real Betis and Olympiakos respectively. The Costa Rica international would have thought he had finally made a breakthrough into Arsenal first team last season, having made 30 appearances – scoring 4 goals in the process – but Arsene Wenger had other plans.
The left-footed winger was not included in the matchday squad that lost 4-3 to Liverpool last weekend and that is evidential enough that he is surplus to requirements at the Emirates.
Campbell will now join his compatriot Brian Ruiz at Sporting, whose boss Jorge Jesus is a known admirer of the Costa Rican. He tried to sign Campbell while in charge of Benfica and now, he will finally be getting his man.
The above named Portuguese newspaper claim Campbell will soon complete his medicals and the deal could be announce imminently.
The season-long loan move to Sporting will be Campbell’s fifth since joining Arsenal, having played for Villareal in 2015. However, Sporting could make the move a permanent one if all goes well.
