Arsenal are looking to gazump West Bromwich Albion in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon forward Islam Slimani and this could be devastating for The Baggies.
West Brom have managed to sign only Matt Phillips from QPR, as well as defender Brendan Galloway [loan] and were still in the market hoping to bring in new additions to bolster thier squad.
The Baggies want Sporting Lisbon’s Slimani, who was only beaten to the top scorer gong by Benfica veteran Jonas, who bagged 32 Primeira Liga goals. Slimani managed 27 goals, five short of his nearest rival and the Algerian’s goal haul was more than Jackson Martinez [former Porto striker] managed in any of the three consecutive campaigns he ended as top goalscorer between 2013 and 2015.
West Brom boss Tony Pulis must have seen Slimani as a bargain at £21m, but he will not be delighted with the news of Arsenal trying to muscle in on their deal for the Algeria international. Arsenal have already opened talks with Sporting, according to reports, and the North London club could prevent West Brom from signing Slimani to replace want-away Saido Berahino.
The lure of Champions League football could make Slimani join Arsenal instead, should the Gunners interest be true.
