Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger thinks Lucas Perez could bring the brilliance that Arsenal missed out on when they failed to clinch a deal for Jamie Vardy earlier on in the summer.
Perez is on the verge of becoming an Arsenal player, with Arsenal and Deportivo La Coruna reaching a £17m agreement to sign the Spanish forward. Perez took a similar route to stardom like Vardy, who turned down a move to Arsenal and opted to extend his contract at Leicester this season.
During his early 20s, Perez featured for Atletico Madrid junior team and also had spells in Ukraine and Greece before joining Deportivo in 2014 on an initial loan deal that was made permanent last summer.
The 27-year old scored 17 goals last season and, Wenger likes that Perez can operate as a striker as well as in the middle.
“Yes, I like that one”, Wenger said, when comparisons to Vardy was mentioned.
“He is a late developer. He played in a different position.
“He moved centrally in a successful way. I think he has good link-up qualities, good finishing qualities. Let’s see if we can finish the job.”
