Arsenal’s long and winding search for quality players this summer is still ongoing and this time around, it has led them to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.
A report from Squawka is claiming Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is ready to cough up £60m to sign talismanic Antoine Griezmann, as the French boss has been secretly pursuing the Atleti attacker all summer.
Griezmann was superb for France at the European Championships. Scoring six goals and gathering two assists in seven appearances. The 26-year old is a target for top European sides, despite recently extending his contract at the Vicente Calderon.
However, the transfer is unlikely with the summer window only seven days away from slamming shut. It is believed Wenger was banking on Diego Costa returning to Atleti before making his interest official, as the La Liga giants could consider selling Griezmann then.
Griezmann’s buyout clause at Atleti reportedly stands at a whopping £86.2m, having penned a new five-year extension.
Nevertheless, it still remains a huge doubt whether Wenger could be willing to loosen the purse strings to pay as high as that fee for the France international, who has also courted the interests of Chelsea and Manchester United.
Griezmann joined Atletico Madrid from Real Sociedad in 2014 and, he has been a pivotal player for the Madrid outfit ever since.
