Barton, 34, was loosely linked with a move to Arsenal in 2011, before the midfielder eventually joined join Queens Park Rangers.
But he reckons the north London outfit decided to cool their interest following his involvement in a scuffle with Gervinho.
The Ivorian striker, then of Arsenal, was sent off for slapping Barton during a Premier League clash with Newcastle.
“No, intermediaries spoke on their behalf,” Barton told FourFourTwo, when asked how close he came to joining the Gunners instead of QPR.
“There was definitely some low-level interest, and before I got sent off against Arsenal, when the thing with Gervinho happened, I was due to hold some form of discussions with them.
“But then it never came to be.
“Would I have liked to have played for Arsenal?
“Of course. Who wouldn’t?”
Barton re-signed for Burnley last month after terminating his contract with Rangers.
And the former Manchester City star scored the winner on his league return for the Clarets, firing home a second-half free-kick in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Southampton.
