Several media outlets are carrying a report that Arsenal forward Joel Campbell is in Lisbon right now for medical examinations ahead of a move to Sporting.
It appears the Costa Rican’s nightmarish stint at Arsenal has finally come to an end – although the transfer is an initial season-long loan deal, which could later become a permanent one.
Campbell has been unable to fully convince Arsene Wenger he is worthy of a place in the Gunners’ starting XI and with the former Monaco boss letting him leave when the club is still searching for a new striker, it is obvious for all to see where Campbell stands in Wenger’s pecking order. Or could it be that a striker is on his way to the Emirates. Highly dubitable as Wenger’s priority now is a defender.
Campbell will now team up with country mate Brian Ruiz at Sporting, whose boss Jorge Jesus has been a long-term admirer of the left-footed attacker.
The move will definitely make much sense for Campbell as he will have Champions League football there, as well as ample game time which he could not get at Arsenal.
Campbell joined the Gunners in 2011 and spent his first three seasons on loan at Lorient, Real Betis and Olympiakos respectively. He returned to Arsenal after his loan spell at the Greek club ended in 2014, but Campbell had to be loaned out once again to Villareal in 2015.
