Arsenal number one target for the defence Shkodran Mustafi will soon be an Arsenal player in the coming days, if reports making the rounds are true.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reporter Emanuele Giulianelli claims Mustafi will undergo medical examinations at Arsenal on Monday after the North London outfit and the player’s club, Valencia agreed a £25.9m transfer fee for the German centre-back.
Mustafi, 24, missed training for Valencia this week due to a muscle sprain, which is reportedly what the deal hinges on. But Arsenal will lodge a formal bid if the injury is just a minor one.
Arsenal enthusiast Giulianelli [@EmaGiulianelli] tweeted: “Arsenal: looks like Mustafi will be agreed tomorrow. Club were waiting to see if the injury will heal as expected. Looks to be €30m (£25.9m). Mustafi medicals with Arsenal expected to be on Monday.”
Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista’s injuries have made Arsenal go all out in search of centre-backs, as the pairing of Rob Holding and Calum Chambers is not seen as strong enough following their exposure against Liverpool as Arsenal lost. With Arsene Wenger stating in his pre-Leicester match conference on Thursday that Arsenal will spend on a quality player if the need arises, Mustafi seems to be the best option for the Gunners this summer.
The North Londoners have been linked with several other names including West Bromwich Albion’s Johnny Evans, Simon Kjaer of Fenerbahce and most recently, Jose Fonte [Southampton], Jose Gimenez [Atletico Madrid] and Marcel Tisserand of Monaco.
Arsenal are likely to sign a centre-back before the transfer window is slammed shut on August 31, but whether he will be a squad player or a brilliant long-term addition is yet to be known.
